The North-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria is set to eliminate cervical cancer giving the submission of Prof. Bala Audu, the president of Gynaecologic Oncology Society of Nigeria, who is also the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare. Mission for Education, Social and Health (MESH), the NGO of National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) is collaborating with Nigeria Cancer Society (NCS) and End Cervical Cancer Nigeria Initiative (ECCNI) to launch cancer advocacy program to build the capacity of Muslim Faith Based Organization (FBOs) to include cancer prevention in their advocacy activities. The objective of the program is to provide a framework to increase participation of religious bodies in the campaign against cancer. The idea for the program was conceptualized during activities organized by MESH and partner organizations to mark the 2023 World Hijab Day (WHD) and World Cancer Day (WCD) at the Conference Hall of National Mosque Abuja, on 4th of February 2023.   Members of End Cervical Cancer Nigeria Initiative (ECCNI) on the 6th of October 2022 paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, CP. Magaji Ahmed Kotongora in his office at the headquarters of Kebbi Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in attendance at the meeting were senior officers in his cabinet and members of kebbi state committee of the Cervical Cancer Treatment Access Program (CCTAP); Pharm Funsho Adeoti, Nurse Zainab Yusuf, Nurse Rachel Omoladun Onifade, Mr. Mustapha Yusuf Adesina and Dr. Ishak Lawal.   The goal of the visit was to intimate the new CP of the ongoing collaboration between ECCNI and the Police Cottage Hospital, Kebbi Command and to solicit his support towards achieving the objectives of the collaboration. ECCNI Kicks off Cervical Cancer Treatment Access Program (CCTAP) in Kebbi State

The CCTAP is an initiative of ECCNI which is been co-sponsored by Aminu Garba Magashi(AMG) Foundation, endorsed by Nigerian Cancer Society(NCS) and seeking collaboration of all stakeholders in providing access to treatment for indigent cervical cancer patients. It is currently being piloted in Kebbi state with the support of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OPPAN), Medicaid Cancer Foundation (MCF) and BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH).  The Kebbi Pilot project will be executed with an initial sum of N400,000 ($952 representing half of the total initial pledge of N800,000 for the program. Cervical cancer experts brainstormed best practices to achieve the 70% cervical screening target in low resource settings at the May edition of the Roundtable Discussion Series of End Cervical Cancer Nigeria Initiative (ECCNI). The keynote speaker at the event, Prof Cyril Dim, provided an overview of the WHO strategy to accelerate elimination of cervical cancer. The WHO strategy has a 3 prong approach; 1- 90% vaccination of eligible girls with HPV vaccines by 15 years; 2 – 70% screening of eligible women with high precision test at age 35 then 45; and 3- 90%  of all identified cervical lesions are treated. The second prong on screening of eligible women was the focus of this edition of the roundtable discussion series. The situation report for Nigeria showed that cervical cancer continues to be a public health problem despite the abundance of knowledge of how best to prevent it.
